Global Standards:
What are global standards? How do they relate to the Common Core Standards? What are global competencies? Find the answers here.
Colorado Department of Education standards offer many ways to link global education into your instruction using a standard's based curriculum design and 21 century learning skills.
My unit plan focused on social studies in the area of civics and geography and language development standards.
My unit was called, What is on my dinner plate? How the origin of our food choices impacts the world: Impact of local versus global food choices.
The unit's focus was to have the students do an inquiry based action research project. Students will learn how to define and measure hunger and food insecurity and compare different families food expenses for a week. Students will also discuss the cultural significance of food and how food is an integral aspect of who we are. We will then research sustainable agricultural and food distribution practices that are used around the world through real case studies, picture books, video, (STG partnerships), and interact with our sister school via email and Skype in Nairobi, Kenya called the Empakasi School and the Mwebaza Infant Primary School in Kyengera, Uganda. Students will generate questions to interview students in Uganda about their sustainable agricultural programs.
Social studies standards: (Continued below with global competencies)
1. Geography: Research the global origins of certain foods and build knowledge about where their food comes from.
2. Geography: Connections within and across human and physical systems are developed.
Geography 2: Students will learn about the causes and effects of importing and exporting foods into our local communities.
G3: Students become agents of change by raising awareness and money to support local farmers to grow sustainable crops.
All of my WIDA English language Development Standards (see below) are also in alignment because this lesson is very language rich.
Reading Standards:
Compare and contrast key ideas presented in multiple resources, some fiction and some non-fiction.
Integration of knowledge and ideas- 7 and 9
Speaking and listening: comprehension/collaboration/presentation of knowledge and ideas.
Writing: Research to build and present knowledge
GLOBAL COMPETENCIES covered in unit plan also align with standards:

WIDA English Language Development Standards also guide my instructional design in my classroom.
I work hard to integrate all of the different standards into my instruction. I strive to integrate global education in units integrates all three of these standards into my ELL lesson design.
